From Hat to Heart
"Whose heart do you belong to?" she heard herself say, as she peered inside the hat that day.
"What makes you ask, and why the need to know?" the hat replied with a curious glow.
She smiled and then paused to reflect, "The stars always gleam, they shimmer and shine with a radiant beam. They light the dark as night draws near, and in their keeping, we rest without fear."
"Ah, yes indeed.", the hat thought and gave a knowing nod.
"A wondrous truth, how bright you are and for that I will prod. So tell me then, my clever rue, why does a heart beat and for who?"
The girl grew quiet, thoughtful and still, then shared the belief she knew by will: "A heart must pulse, it must give to grow; spreading warmth and joy with its magical glow. It beats with love that aches to be shared, for love is endless when deeply cared."
"Oh yes, oh yes!" the hat laughed with delight, "Your words ring true, your soul shines bright."
And so, this heart, now vast, now free, is more than big enough for just you and me.
